DK2020

In the DK2020 project, Danish municipalities worked with the same standard for climate action planning as used by some of the world's most climate-ambitious cities in the C40 Cities network.

This was the first time that the C40 standard was used by and further developed for use in smaller cities and municipalities. Thus, the DK2020 municipalities are writing international climate history.

In DK2020, Danish municipalities are following in the footsteps of C40 cities and developing ambitious climate action plans in line with the Paris Agreement. 95 of the 98 Danish municipalities have developed Paris compatible climate action plans through the DK2020 collaboration.

The project provided technical assistance and support to municipalities to develop climate action plans that comply with the C40 Climate Action Planning Framework (CAPF). The climate action plans focus on all sectors within the municipalities' geographical area and will define how the municipalities will become climate neutral and climate resilient by 2050 at the latest. Five geographical organizations consisting of staff from Local Government Denmark (KL), the five Danish regions and local operators assist the municipalities with advice and sparring on the climate action plan development process.

Background

In 2019, 20 municipalities became part of the DK2020 pilot project. In autumn 2020, a further 44 municipalities joined the expanded DK2020 project , and in autumn 2021, a further 31 municipalities joined.

The Municipality of Copenhagen is not part of DK2020 as they are members of C40 and already had a Paris compatible climate action plan before the launch of DK2020.
