Denmark's green think tank CONCITO

Denmark’s green think tank CONCITO convey new and proven climate solutions to politicians, companies and citizens. Our purpose is to catalyze action to lower emissions of greenhouse gases and action to limit the harmful effects of global warming as a way to build climate safe and robust societies.

CONCITO was founded in 2008. Our purpose is to provide science and knowledge based analyses and information on the most effective and cost efficient transition towards a climate-safe society in Denmark and in other parts of the world.

CONCITO means "I put in motion" in Latin and that is exactly what Denmark's first green think tank wants to do on climate change. To catalyze and leverage sound knowledge and effective actions at scale.

CONCITO is Denmark’s largest green network with nearly 150 companies, researchers, organisations and individuals as members of the CONCITO Council – each possessing extensive knowledge of climate change and leading in their field. The Council Members constitute the think tank and are affiliated to a number of working groups on specific topics, serving to enrich the development of new projects, analysis and dissemination projects.

CONCITO is financed partly by independent foundations and project partners.

CONCITO is also involved in a number of international networks with other think tanks world wide who share the same purpose and profile as CONCITO, e.g. the World Resources Institute in the U.S., ZERO in Norway and the European Climate Foundation in the Hague.

Biomasse energi flisproduktion
Negotiations for implementation of the Danish 70% reduction target by 2030 is under way, and the first sector agreement on energy and industry emissions was struck late June with a focus on renewable energy, energy savings, heavy industry, etc. The agreement includes needed mitigation measures and many good initiatives and elements that will contribute significantly to reaching our target. But the agreement does not address the "elephant in the room" - the massive biomass use in the energy sector. In this blog the main challenges related to the extensive use of biomass are outlined, and specific recommendations to how biomass should be addressed are given.
CONCITO WRI
CONCITO and the World Resources Institute have established a strategic partnership. CONCITO and WRI are very different in size but share fundamentally the objective of promoting a science-based green and socially fair transition, in cooperation with political institutions, businesses and civil society.

In addition to domestic climate targets and a new institutional framework, the new Danish Climate Act will include separate commitments to the international dimension of Danish climate policy. As an input to the negotiations of the Climate Act, CONCITO presented a memo on eight areas where Denmark can influence global climate efforts.

In this concept note, CONCITO outlines a green deal approach to assisting coal-dependent emerging economies in making a quick transition to clean energy systems aligned with 1.5 degrees.

The green transition has not yet manifested itself noticeably in the Danish road freight transport sector. Over 99 % of the 42,000 trucks in Denmark are still running on 93 % fossil diesel fuel. However, there is a range of opportunities to reduce road freight transport emissions. The most promising track in terms of far-reaching and long-term decarbonization is found to be electrification with the combination of battery-powered trucks and an Electric Road System (ERS) with overhead lines over parts of the main road network.

CONCITO believes that climate policy objectives can only be achieved through the forging of coalitions and partnership among politicians, businesses and citizens - the government, the markets and the civil society. Therefore all these stakeholders an sectors are represented in the think tank.

CONCITO believes that climate problems have to be solved internationally but that Denmark can learn from adopting the best practices abroad while also benefit from leading by example in transitioning the economy. History has already shown that there are huge political, business and economic potentials in being a head of the curve.

CONCITO also work to make climate problems and their solutions known to the wider public through proactive PR and communication.

CONCITO is driven by necessity but believes that the climate battle can be turned to everyone's advantage.

CONCITO is independent of political and commercial interests.
