CONCITO engages in collaboration with leading knowledge organizations on a vision for Nordic climate neutrality

With increasing global greenhouse gas emissions, it is more important than ever that the green transition be accelerated. In order to comply with the Paris target, the entire world must be climate neutral in a few decades. Climate neutrality is therefore the next obvious goal for national climate policies. The Nordic countries are among the richest in the world and are traditionally seen as leaders in the green transition. It is therefore crucial that the Nordic countries take the lead and set an example for the development of the climate-neutral society. An example that can be applied globally.

The Nordic countries have all set targets for climate neutrality, but it remains unclear at what pace countries are meeting the target and what challenges and potentials lie in the way. Against this background, CONCITO is now entering into a close collaboration with leading Nordic think tanks and research institutions to monitor the Nordic countries' progress towards climate neutrality and to propose a unified Nordic vision for the climate neutral society.

The collaboration is anchored in the project "Nordic Stocktake and Visions - Pathways to Climate Neutrality", which is financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers and a part of the implementation of the Nordic Vision 2030: Vores vision 2030 | Nordisk Samarbejde (norden.org). The project, which runs until the end of this year, is carried out by CONCITO in collaboration with the Norwegian climate think tank CICERO, the Swedish environmental think tank IVL, Islands and Reykjavik Universities and the Finnish consulting company, Tyrsky Consulting.

The project aims to inspire Nordic and global political leaders and the private sector to make a faster transition towards climate neutrality. The project will also contribute to creating images of the climate-neutral society of the future.

The project is a continuation of CONCITO's recent publication "A scenario for: Danish climate neutrality in 2040", which shows that it is practically possible to reach Danish climate neutrality earlier than previously assumed - namely as early as 2040 Danish Climate Neutrality by 2040 | CONCITO.

The project has great relevance in both a Danish, Nordic and global context.

"As a well-off, western society, it is important that we lead the way for the rest of the world. Denmark and the other Nordic countries are well prepared to take on this responsibility. We have the necessary know-how and a strong tradition of leading by example. In this project, we shed light on topics and challenges that are important on that path", says program director Peter Andreas Norn, CONCITO, who leads the Nordic project.

At the same time, the project is part of ongoing work to establish an ever-closer collaboration between leading Nordic think tanks and research institutions in the climate area, which CONCITO started in collaboration along with a number of Nordic partners in the year 2022.
