Rethink Denmark

Our current land use is not sustainable and global land use plays a key role in the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, forest loss and the release of reactive nitrogen and phosphorus into the environment. Scientists estimate that planetary boundaries are currently being exceeded in all these areas.

If planetary boundaries continue to be exceeded, there is a risk of dramatic and irreversible changes in the global environment and climate. We therefore need to change the way we use and manage our land.

The project aims to create the basis for setting a common vision for Danish land use. It will provide a clear understanding of the dilemmas we face and shed light on which elements are most important for the development of land use in the future. If we want to go in a certain direction, what decisions need to be taken and what are the main barriers? What cultural and technological leaps are we depending on, and do we have the power to influence them?

Specifically, the project aims to:

  1. Establish the knowledge base for the discussion of appropriate, climate neutral and climate resilient use of Danish land, ensuring synergy with society's other land needs.
  2. Provide concrete proposals for policy and management reforms that ensure that the long-term objectives for the Danish landscape are met, and identify related dilemmas, including which elements the socio-economic decision tools should include.
  3. Communicate, dialogue and share knowledge in order to maximise the acceptance, understanding and influence of knowledge and guidance from the project among citizens, stakeholders and decision-makers. This includes facilitating a discussion between policy makers, key stakeholders, researchers, civil society and international experts on how Danish land should be used in the future.
  4. Create a model for land use change that can inspire other countries.
