We are seeking a head of program to lead joint efforts by the WRI and CONCITO to collaborate on new climate related analysis and knowledge products, and build networks and partnerships with leading Nordic actors

Job summary

In this position you will join the effort to combat climate change, advance sustainable development, and spearhead a new strategic partnership on climate action entered between the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Danish green think tank, CONCITO. The overall purpose is to leverage climate knowledge and action everywhere in support of more sustainable development pathways in both developed and developing countries.

With the support of senior managers and experts from WRI and CONCITO, including the two Directors for International Cooperation, the relevant subject-matter leads in WRI and CONCITO, and the WRI Europe Director, you will be responsible for catalyzing collaboration within prioritized areas of work, and in deepening joint efforts to exchange knowledge and experiences in the green transition between global, Nordic and Danish levels of action.

You will lead joint efforts by the WRI and CONCITO to collaborate on new climate related analysis and knowledge products, and build networks and partnerships with leading Nordic actors (including the Danish government, and progressive Nordic businesses, cities, research institutes and foundations).

You will lead efforts to mobilize new funding for the WRI and CONCITO strategic partnership from public and private donors, including partners within government, business, cities and philanthropic institutions. You will also support the work of the International Hub of the P4G – “Partnering for Green Growth and Global Goals 2030”, hosted by the WRI, and in coordination with the national Danish P4G Hub hosted by State of Green. The position is located at the CONCITO office in Copenhagen, and you will have a dual reporting line to WRI and CONCITO managements.

Job responsibilities

  • Strategy and planning – Develop a multiyear strategy in line with the WRI and CONCITO Strategic Plans, and develop annual work plans for implementation and growth of the strategic partnership
  • Stakeholder engagement and positioningLead efforts to build new, and strengthen existing, climate action networks, partnerships and relationships, with European, Nordic and Danish partners among governments, businesses, cities, research institutions and philanthropic institutions.
  • Fundraising In coordination and close collaboration with WRI’s institutional and strategy development team, identify potential new European and Nordic donors to support the WRI-CONCITO strategic partnership
  • Project development – Coordinate the development of new joint project proposals in close consultation with WRI and CONCITO experts, while maintaining an opportunistic approach, within prioritized areas of work (see below)

Scope & focus

Prioritized areas of work are as follows (further details can be provided upon request):

  • Facilitate exchange of knowledge and best practices in advancing environmentally sustainable and climate-friendly food production and consumption; sustainable and low-carbon urban development and transport systems,
  • Pursue concrete opportunities for collaboration between CONCITO’s “future foods” program, and “future cities” program, and relevant WRI platforms, including in particular, the WRI Better Buying Lab, the WRI ‘Ross Center for Sustainable Cities’, and the WRI ‘Building Efficiency Accelerator’
  • Assist the P4G International Hub in the preparation of the first P4G State of the art report, including exploring opportunities for identifying contributions to the report by relevant Danish key stakeholders, in collaboration with the national Danish P4G hub, hosted by State of Green.
  • Support emerging collaboration with the New Climate Economy team related to the advancement of more sustainable and climate friendly macroeconomic modelling and investment practices, and support a high profile engagement with Danish constituencies on key messages from the 2018 NCE Global Opportunities report

Management and Reporting

  • Report to the CONCITO International Director and the WRI International Cooperation Director. You will be part of the WRI Europe network anchored and supported by the WRI Europe Director.
  • Maintain regular information flow and reporting on progress to relevant teams and managements at the WRI (including to the WRI Europe Director) and CONCITO.
  • Allocate up to one month for induction and training at the WRI offices in Washington DC, The WRI Europe Office in The Hague, or the WRI London Office with the view to ensure familiarization with institutional processes and to support joint work and the building of stronger day-to-day relationships with relevant WRI teams

Job Qualifications

  • Masters’ degree or higher. Proven analytical skills and good technical understanding of climate change, environment and sustainable development policy issues at national and international levels is essential, including intimate familiarity with the Paris Climate Agreement and the 2030 Global Goals.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience working on climate, environment and sustainable development related issues within a bilateral or international organization, or with a relevant global company.
  • Ability to think and work strategically in an international setting, including with regards to national, bilateral and international partners among governments, businesses and philanthropic foundations.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, and strong skills in communication, networking and partnership building. Ability to inspire, take initiative, work independently, work in teams, and be flexible on changing priorities. Experience from working in a matrix setting.
  • Experience in developing complex project proposals for engagement with external partners and potential funders. Exceptional writing, proofreading and presentation skills. Proven track record in resource mobilization.
  • Fluency in English and Danish.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.

Recruitment

  • The appointment is for a period of a minimum of 2 years, with option for extension for up to 2 additional years pending further decision and financing.
  • WRI and CONCITO offer a competitive remuneration package based on individual qualifications and experiences, and in full compliance with Danish labor laws and regulations, including with regards to pension, holidays, allowances, sickness, etc.
  • Start date for the position is as quickly as possible, and no later than March 2019.
